One season ends….another begins

August 28th 2016

The new 2016/17 season is almost upon us and Worsley have had to make some tough decisions. We now will have just the one team in the Manchester League along with the usual Bolton League side.

This is necessary because some of our juniors are going to University and can no longer guarantee playing for us. Also we need to have everybody available for the difficult task of playing in Division B this year  after  the great performance last season in winning C Division.

Well done and good luck this season.

Bolton League Cup Final

January 12th 2016

We won the Cup!!

In a tense and very close series of games Worsley pulled off the improbable. With young George losing, Andy drawing and Mike winning it came down to the last pair to get a result. Both Stuart and Georgia were a pawn down and the omens were not too good. Then Stuart won material but was well behind on the clock so a draw was accepted when down to a few minutes. It was down to Geogia to split the sides. A Worsley pawn began to advance down the board to its queening square and with time almost up, a  scramble saw Georgia capitalise on a couple of errors to win!

Well done to all players.

New season update

October 20th 2015

We are well underway into our new campaign with the usual ups and downs that make chess such an intriguing game.

Please check out for fixture changes such as those posted to the Bolton league today.

We have lost Rachel in our juniors but have recruited Dimitreus Lam into the club. Also it is nice to see Jeremy Cai beginning to settle down with a couple of victories in his last two games.

The shield has arrived for the Club Championship. Named the “Brian Rhodes Shield” in memory of past member Brian. It looks great and is a fitting tribute to a fondly remembered player.

Worsley  players  sparkle!

August 25 2015

Dear Stuart,

This weekend myself, George and Jeremy played at the Manchester Congress in Owen's Park.

I came joint second with 4/5 (3 wins 2 draws) in the Major (Under-165) and thereby claimed prize money of 65 pounds. (A photo of which is on the photos page)

George claimed 2 points in the Major also, and I believe Jeremy scored 2 points in the Knights (under-125) though I am not a hundred percent sure.

 Thanks.

(The results will be on the MCF website shortly.)

Jack Virgin.

Subscriptions for 2016

The subs have not changed for many years and to enable us to stock up fully, over time, not this year, and to invest in a club-held trophy, and some winner-held trophies for juniors it was suggested that the subs should change. Much discussion was had and the followed was voted in

An increase to £20 per year for adult members (to play for the club someone must be a member) and £10 for junior members. Whilst this increase is high in % terms the cost is under 40p per week for adults and 20p per week for children, the venue remains free (please buy drinks do not bring your own that is a condition of our free venue) It's £3.50 for 1hr in Wacky Warehouse, a Latte at Costa is £2.25, £9 to see Jurrasic World at the cinema (£7 for kids), so I personally think it's very good value. That being said if anyone has any issue either in paying or objects to the price change please speak to one of the club officials (Me/Mike/Stuart) and we'd be happy to discuss it with you.

ALL MEMBERS SHOULD PAY THEIR SUBS BY END OF AUGUST FOR 2015/16

AGM

July 19 2015.

This Wednesday, the 22nd July, will see the latest AGM at the club.

There will be brief reports from officers and a discussion on how best to remember Brian Rhodes.

Your treasurer will be looking to pick up some "subs" to save time later on!

Hope we have a good attendance.

George for England

 May 6 2015.

Daryl Harman informs us that young George has been selected for England.

"Great news!

George played in the Under 11 England trials in Liverpool last weekend. These were the top 40 children competing from all over England. Over two days George came away with 3.5/6 and was one of twelve asked to join the England Junior Chess squad.

Georges Piste de Resistance was an 8 move victory over a 130 rated junior playing the Budapest Gambit......with thanks to Jack Virgin.

Cruel but hey...Carpe Diem!"

 Kind Regards Daryl.

Congratulations from all at the club and all the best in your England matches.
